Institutionalization

I am tired of rigid thinking.

Give me a minute to explain.

Our biggest public problems are often not just a single law or regulation, but rather the institutionalized mindset that prevents sensible changes from happening. You and I know a thing or two about “institutionalization.” Institutions are important. I esteem them as necessary structures for order. Find my essay on the subject in the notes at the end of this video. But it is the suffix ending that gets institutions and their people in trouble.

Being institutionalized means organizations operate based on the phrase, “This is the way we’ve always done it.”

Such thinking does not leave room for cultural changes or the need to adjust communication strategies. We know rigidity when we see it. We know speed and decision making is important in a changing world. We need institutions. We don’t need institutionalized thinking.

Thanks for spending this minute with me, Dr. Mark Eckel.
